A group of seven alleged individuals of German left-wing extremist group face trial over series of violent incidents

A group of seven people accused of being the left-wing extremist organization Antifa Ost went on trial on Tuesday, facing charges for violent actions against far-right activists that resulted in the nickname “Hammer Gang”.

International terror listing and legal charges

Recently, the United States designated the organization as a terrorist organization along with several other left-wing extremist and anarchist groups.

German prosecutors state the group was responsible for attacks on locations in Germany and Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Included in the allegations is the repeated targeting of a business proprietor in central Thuringia, whose venue was known as a gathering spot for far-right supporters.

Some suspects are allegedly accused of employing hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, leaving some with serious injuries.

Trial details and international connections

The trial involving six men and one woman is scheduled to continue until mid-2026 in the city of Dresden. Two defendants, identified as Johann G. and Paul M., also face charges for attacks in Budapest during February 2023, coinciding with an yearly gathering called the “day of honor” that draws far-right participants from across Europe.

Separately, a different German individual, Maja T., is currently on trial in the Hungarian judicial system for four counts of attempted violent acts against neo-Nazis prior to the same rally in that year.

Historical background and organizational structure

Eastern Germany has historically served as a hotbed for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigration youth organizations, as well as the frequently radical anti-fascist networks that oppose them.

Authorities characterize Johann G as a high-ranking member within Antifa Ost, tasked with organizing violent acts and bringing in new members.

Together with Paul M., he is accused of organizing training sessions where radical left activists trained in fighting methods and simulated violent actions. At depots managed by the suspect, the network reportedly stockpiled hammers, irritant sprays, concealment items and mobile phones.

Previous convictions and global responses

Another militant formerly involved with the group, Lina E., became a symbolic figure within certain radical left communities following her conviction in 2023 for targeting suspected right-wing individuals.

America's terrorist listing renders organization affiliates barred from entering the US, blocks financial holdings they could possess within the world’s largest economy and makes it illegal providing material support to them.

The German right-wing AfD party applauded the American move and called on the government in Berlin to follow suit. However, the country's diplomatic office simply stated it had “acknowledged” of the American classification.

“The danger from the [Antifa Ost] group has substantially diminished lately. The ringleaders and most aggressive participants have either already been convicted or are in custody.”
