The ex-lawyer for the former president has left her position as New Jersey's top federal prosecutor. This comes after a court battle that invalidated her right to serve.

Official Departure

The head of the Justice Department, Pam Bondi, confirmed Habba's resignation on the start of the week. She commented that the judicial decision made it impossible for Habba to perform her duties.

"Do not interpret adherence to the ruling as defeat," Habba stated. "This battle will now reach across the nation."

Judicial Challenge

Her resignation comes a week after a federal appellate panel found that she had been unlawfully serving as the federal prosecutor. This judgment is expected to impact many criminal cases in New Jersey.

The appellate judges declared that a interim role that skirted confirmation by the US Senate ran afoul of the statute on vacant positions.

Ongoing Legal Battle

Bondi said that the former prosecutor will continue working within the Department of Justice as a senior adviser. She will seek further review of the ruling, aiming for a different outcome.

Writing online, the Attorney General contended that the court "cannot be permitted to second-guess the President's choice of lawyers tasked with carrying out the executive branch's core responsibility of enforcing the law."

Record and Legacy

She commended Habba's record and said that during her run, the state capital of Newark saw a one-fifth decrease in crime. Additionally that the Camden recorded its first summer in half a century free from homicides.

Legal Career

Habba, 41, first joined the former president's legal defense in 2021. She later represented her client in his hush-money trial in the previous year, when he was conviction on multiple felony counts of falsifying business records.

Prior to Habba took on the role of US Attorney, Donald Trump had stated he was appointing her as his presidential counsellor during his second administration, calling the lawyer as "unwavering in her loyalty" and a dedicated fighter for justice.
