Australia Establishes a Fresh Record as Healy Confronts Her Ultimate Challenge.

It's difficult for Australia to set fresh records.

The highest peaks have already been conquered.

We're talking about the team that has secured seven Cricket World Cups, plus six more T20 titles, and earlier maintained 1,294 days undefeated in 50-over cricket.

The alternative records, those for the peak baggers, are what's still available for a team that has achieved everything.

That it took as late as Sunday's success by three wickets over India for them to complete their first ODI chase above 300, reclaiming their record for the highest in the female 50-over format, is, honestly, a compliment to the bowlers that have worn canary yellow over five decades.

It's challenging for their batters to maintain a record if not afforded the chance.

In the end, the outcome of Australia allowing 330 runs was leader Alyssa Healy getting an opportunity to deliver her latest masterpiece.

Then best known as the teenage relative of celebrated previous Aussie wicketkeeper Ian, she first played in 2010 after Australia failed to win either of the T20 or ODI World Cups from the prior year and has witnessed all through 15 trophy-laden years since.

A T20 championship victory happened three months after her debut and seven international trophies have come from 10 tries across formats.

The gritty keeper was in attendance in Derby in 2017 when a semi-final defeat by India momentarily interrupted the run of success.

That loss "pushed us to reconsider our benchmarks," Healy commented earlier.

At the subsequent ODI World Cup in New Zealand, Healy scored 170 against England in the title decider and was declared player of the series. She ensured her country would not come up short.

The question of whether this latest epic knock surpassed that earlier display can be debated.

Some will argue the case for championship match pressure. Different voices suggest with the test that comes when confronting a historic chase and a raucous India-supporting crowd of 20,000.

What is certain is this ton was much more difficult to anticipate.

The Christchurch carnage in 2022 came as she was the highest scorer, but this knock came after six matches in India over the past few weeks in which she had failed to pass 30.

"For those following me in training, it was a disappointing period because it appeared my form was missing at all," stated Healy.

"Yet the moment you take the field, your fighting spirit take over and you simply focus on the match."

Healy's competitive nature has continuously been her major advantage - and an irreplaceable characteristic in taking over from iconic ex-skipper Meg Lanning.

She was challenged by India's emerging talent Kranti Gaud in recent ODI series, dismissed by the emerging pace bowler in each encounter, but here that only provided Healy's inspiration.

A single came off the opening delivery and from there the batsman was in motion.

"The possibility to take the field and lock in a contest with her and simply enjoy myself in that regard, sort of got me going," stated Healy.

She achieved fifty in 35 pitches - her quickest at the global tournament - and her ton in 84 balls as she punished short deliveries, hitting 21 fours and three sixes.

Once she was out her side needed 66 more at a run-a-ball - a manageable total now requiring a leisurely stroll.

"To chase 330 is unfamiliar ground so I am glad we have the assurance to accomplish that now," added Healy.

"Hopefully we don't have to do it another time but, if necessary, we know we can do it."

These statements will be the last competing nations at this championship should hear.

In recent days a feeling they will succeed regardless of circumstances has grown stronger - this triumph coming after win against Pakistan by 107-run victory despite being 76-7 at one stage.

Subsequently Australia meet Bangladesh before an encounter with traditional opponents England in Indore in ten days, by which point a semi-final berth may probably be guaranteed.

During that phase they were eliminated from last year's T20 World Cup in a shock defeat by South Africa - a game Healy was absent due to ruptured tissue in her foot as she captained her nation for the inaugural occasion at a major tournament.

So great is her will, she later said she wanted to have participated through the pain.

But while she subsequently acknowledged those injuries have pushed back plans to retire, this tournament is likely to be her concluding event as leader in 50-over cricket and she is still to achieve a global event as skipper.

Success in India would lead her to the peak of her final mountain.
