California's Governor Acknowledges He Is Considering a White House Bid in 2028
Gavin Newsom, a leading member of the Democratic party, has revealed that he intends to determine whether to run for president in 2028 once the 2026 elections wrap up.
"Yeah, I couldn't be truthful if I said no," the governor commented when questioned about giving serious thought to a campaign for president post the 2026 ballots. "I'd just be lying. And I can't do that."
The governor's tenure as governor concludes in January 2027, and term limits prevent another run. But, he emphasized that any decision is a long way off.
"The future will decide," he remarked.
Rising Profile as a Political Adversary
Newsom has come to the forefront as a prominent critic of the former president's team, employing his digital presence and advocating for a initiative that would boost the party's congressional seats in following redistricting by Republicans. This move has drawn criticism from adversaries.
Federal Funding Dispute
Donald Trump's secretary of transportation, Sean Duffy, alleged that the governor is indifferent about Californians in a weekend interview on Fox News. The secretary revealed a strategy to withhold taxpayer dollars from California and suggested eliminating the authority to provide commercial driver's licenses.
"I plan to withdraw a significant sum from California," he stated, in the wake of a recently reported deadly accident in California involving an unauthorized trucker that led to loss of life and four injuries.
The governor's team noted that the federal government had renewed the individual's authorization multiple times, which enabled him to receive a commercial driver's license under national regulations.
Duffy had before stated he was blocking $40m from California for failing to implement linguistic standards for CDL holders.
Strong Response from the Team
"One-time television figure, now Secretary of Transportation, fails to grasp U.S. regulations," the governor's team retorted in a last month's comment addressing the secretary's comments. "In the meantime, in contrast to this person, we focus on reality: California truck drivers had a death rate much lower than the national average. The state of Texas – the single state with additional licensed drivers – has a rate substantially higher than California. Data speaks for itself. The federal leadership misleads."
Voter Sentiment and Future Prospects
A recent study found that 72% of Democrats and a significant portion of the electorate indicated that Newsom should run for president in 2028. After the current administration began, his approval ratings has grown to an average of about one-third from previous levels, while his unfavorability has decreased from an mean of more than 40% to under 40%.
Earlier this year, the governor commented while traveling several key regions that he had "uncertainty" about his intentions for 2028.
He also referenced his personal struggles, including being diagnosed with dyslexia at the early childhood.
"The thought that a individual who scored 960 on the SAT, who has ongoing difficulties with text, who was always in the back of the classroom – that such a possibility is discussed is, in and of itself, amazing," he said. "It's anyone's guess? I'm looking forward to who emerges in 2028 and who rises to the occasion. And that is the issue for the American people."
