The British tennis star secured the most important win of his career by rallying from a set down to beat world No 1 Carlos Alcaraz with a stunning comeback in the second round of the Paris Masters.

While he had earlier overcome Alcaraz on two prior meetings, this victory represents Norrie's maiden win over a reigning world number one.

"Huge. Extremely important for me," stated Norrie, who is now the latest UK male player in the record books to overcome a world No 1. "Returning from a physical setback last year, I was defeated in the first round of qualies here. I just sought to appreciate my game in the closing months of the year. To get a victory like this, it's the most significant victory of my professional life, my first win over the global number one and probably the most confident competitor in the world right now."

Norrie, ranked 31st globally, also ended Alcaraz's supreme sequence of nine straight final appearances and 17 straight elite tournament wins, which marked the best series of performances in the Spaniard's developing career.

Contest Breakdown

The top seed appeared to be moving confidently towards victory early on as he cruised past the opening set. However, Norrie slowly battled back into contention by delivering with improved accuracy and dragging the Spanish opponent into extended, grueling exchanges. His persistent steadiness and reliability steadily left its mark.

For much of the battle, the world number one served well but he struggled badly to find his timing off his groundstrokes. The 22-year-old seemed notably struggling executing his signature shot, which has been the most effective stroke in the world for most of this season, producing 29 forehand unforced errors and a combined of 54 errors. Across the net, Norrie gave Alcaraz very few errors, sustaining his steadiness, physicality and penetration throughout while delivering effective serves and selecting opportunities to advance forward and strike effectively.

After battling for a long time due to a serious left forearm injury and struggles with his performance, Norrie fell as low as 91st globally this year. Alcaraz, in spite of his remarkable achievements, is has not yet master how to display his finest performance on indoor courts.
