Dominant Hearts Outclass Meek The Hoops to Go 8 Points Ahead
Match summary
- Kyziridis & Shankland secure victory for the hosts and propel them eight ahead at summit
- Celtic's McGregor equalized early Murray own goal
- Hosts go 13 games unbeaten for the first occasion in 27 years
Rampant Hearts powered eight points clear of Celtic at the top of the Scottish Premiership to strengthen their early-season championship claims and worsen the malaise around the Celtic team.
A superb goal from Kyziridis and a spot-kick from Shankland gave Derek McInnes' side a two-goal advantage that the reigning champions could not overcome.
The young defender - one of three youngsters in the Celtic starting lineup - slashed into his own net in the early stages to put the home side ahead at a energetic Tynecastle, and it was the 22-year-old's foul that led to the spot-kick.
A stylish finish from McGregor of the season had quickly cancelled out Hearts' opener, and Benjamin Nygren almost put Rodgers' team in front, choosing placement over power and allowing Alexander Schwolow to make a crucial stop.
But the unstoppable Hearts side regained dominance to consign the visitors to back-to-back losses for the initial occasion since 2023.
It also gives the Hearts a commanding advantage at the summit.
The last time they were so far clear was in 2005-06 under George Burley, when they ultimately finished second - one of just four occasions that a team has failed to win the title after building such an advantage in the past 27 years.
McInnes, whose former team were second to Celtic on multiple times, has been working hard to play down title talk, as the club seek their maiden league title since the 1960s.
The Celtic boss has seen it all before at Celtic - both perfect and shaky beginnings to a season. He's never ended as runner-up.
But on Sunday's evidence, this Hearts team showed they deserve serious consideration.
Match Analysis: Hearts Take Advantage of Depleted The Visitors
Hearts started with the self-assurance of a side unbeaten in the league this season - the popular attacker delivered a ball for Shankland to fire off target.
Celtic didn't help themselves with some uncharacteristic carelessness in possession and they faltered under their initial test.
A headed effort from Braga was touched on to a post by the Celtic keeper and Shankland's return ball was turned into the net by the hapless defender, in for the injured Cameron Carter-Vickers.
Celtic found their rhythm and started building moves. From a flowing attack, the midfielder released Tierney to square for McGregor, who slotted home.
Aside from the Nygren chance, the visitors found it hard to generate chances for lone frontman Jonny Kenny or his replacement Shin Yamada amid the unavailability of stricken attackers their key strikers.
Hearts regained their intensity and adaptability in creating chances in the opposition half. Kyziridis, one of the finds of the club's scouting network, struck low past Schmeichel from the just outside the area.
Immediately after, Murray tripped the midfielder in the right side of the box and Shankland scored. And it could've been an even more handsome win, had substitute Ageu not been denied by the shot-stopper.
The visitors' performance after the break was somewhat summed up in two incidents involving record signing Arne Engles.
The midfielder's wayward free-kick delivery was in stark contrast to his midweek exploits in the Europa League win over Sturm Graz and the Belgium international was then yellow-carded for a professional foul.
What They Said
Hearts head coach Derek McInnes: "The effort from the squad is evident, the team spirit. That's not always enough to win games consistently.
"Our strength lies in, is skillful players. You're witnessing it from a lot of players who have been here previously. Recent additions are keen to demonstrate their quality.
"We're in a positive moment at the minute, but it's only three points. It's important for us to maintain this form. We've got much work ahead, plenty to improve. After the first two rounds is normally an indication of your standing."
The Celtic boss: "The second goal was disappointing from our perspective. We didn't move when the play was recycled as a line so when they pass the ball, they should have players offside but weren't. We have got to improve with the attempt.
"Plenty of matches to play for. It's still so early. It's only nine games in. Clearly, being eight adrift is not ideal. The comfort is there's numerous fixtures to play.
"We now have to focus on the present and look to find more consistency and more quality in our play."
What's Next for Both Sides?
