Eric Adams Will Support Former Governor Andrew Cuomo in NYC Mayoral Race
NYC's current mayor Mayor Adams declared his intention to endorse former Governor Cuomo in the upcoming mayoral race, despite an extended period of public tension between the pair of Democrats.
A Surprising Reversal After Previous Accusations
Just last month, the mayor had lashed out at the former governor, labeling him a “deceptive figure and a untruthful person” and accusing him of having “a career of pushing Black candidates out of races.” Yet, in a recent statement, Mayor Adams made a U-turn, announcing he now intends to campaign alongside Cuomo in neighborhoods where he holds significant backing.
“I think that it is imperative to really wake up the communities of color that have been affected by urban displacement on how vital this race is,” Adams commented.
Adams continued, “They have watched their housing costs rise due to neighborhood changes and they have been ignored in those areas, and I’m going to go to those neighborhoods and speak one on one with organizers and organizations and I’m going to walk with the governor in those areas and get them motivated.”
Race Dynamics and Current Developments
The mayoral contest has so far been shaped by the competition between the former governor and progressive candidate Zohran Mamdani, whose growing support has made headlines globally and symbolized hopes for a rejuvenated leftwing of the Democratic party.
In a latest candidate forum, both the democratic socialist and GOP candidate his conservative opponent stated they would refuse the mayor's support if extended.
Months ago, the mayor had begun his bid for another term as an unaffiliated candidate after facing federal corruption charges which were later dismissed in exchange for his assistance with government enforcement actions across the city.
During a unrelated press conference on Thursday, the mayor responded to reporters asking about the support announcement by stating, “I'm meeting Andrew this evening.”
The announcement came a day after Adams and Cuomo were spotted attending a game side-by-side at the the NBA team's first game at the famous arena, which occurred immediately following a contentious mayoral debate.
