A popular South African media personality and entertainer has been fatally gunned down in the country's largest city Johannesburg, causing national outrage across a nation struggling with entrenched crime.
Warrick Stock, popularly known as DJ Warras, was attacked in the city centre on Tuesday afternoon.
Police said the 40-year-old entertainer was accosted by three individuals, with one shot at him before running away.
The motive behind the shooting is unknown and no suspects have been apprehended have been made, police said.
Details of the Attack
Law enforcement said that Stock was attacked as he was leaving a location close to the Carlton Centre.
He had devoted time at the building supervising the implementation of safety equipment, which had been controversially occupied by unidentified individuals, as per local media.
"Authorities believe the victim was approached by three unidentified men after he parked his car, and they began shooting at him before running from the location on foot," an official report confirmed.
Security camera video showed a suspect with dreadlocked hair and wearing what resembled a security uniform opening fire on Stock before making his escape.
The DJ tried to run away after he was wounded but fell down on the opposite side of the road.
Police added that Stock had an unused firearm and nothing was taken during the assault.
Important clues, like bullet casings, were recovered from the crime scene.
