Leeds Hold Liverpool at Arm's Length to Earn Valuable Point at Anfield
Two undefeated records remained intact at Anfield, but only one side could derive real contentment from the outcome. Leeds United carried out a textbook strategy of frustrating and restricting Liverpool, with the first scoreless draw of Arne Slot's reign highlighting the persistent issues behind the reigning champions' recent upturn.
Defensive Masterclass Earns Vital Point
A drab goalless draw, the initial in 84 fixtures for Liverpool, was largely due to the defensive dominance of the outstanding defensive duo Struijk and Bijol, combined with the home side's inability to break down a compact visitors' defence. Liverpool were reduced to speculative half-chances, and a sprinkling of discontent could be heard around the stadium at the full-time whistle on a sluggish display.
"Should I don't use the whole group and we have a schedule like this, I would not do this," the manager explained. "With a footballer like Dominic I have to look after him. We all know his past couple of years was difficult. He is in red-hot form but it's important I manage him and sometimes the mind needs to prevail over the emotion."
The Hosts' Frustration in Front of Goal
Arne Slot's team at first displayed more zip and sharpness than in previous matches, with Jeremie Frimpong prominent on the right side. Nevertheless, clear-cut opportunities were scarce. The home side's best moments in the first period fell to striker Hugo Ekitiké.
- Following a smart one-two with Curtis Jones, the French forward drifted infield and forced a stop from keeper Lucas Perri at his front post.
- The visitors' shot-stopper could not hold the shot, needing a crucial intervention from James Justin to stop Florian Wirtz converting the loose ball.
- Ekitiké later sprinted clear onto a ball over the top but was held by Jaka Bijol; although staying on his feet, his shouts for a spot-kick were dismissed.
Spurned Chances Are Pivotal
Ekitiké's evening was compounded when he did not manage to hit the target with his clearest chance. Meeting a swift Frimpong cross in the goal area, the striker misdirected a glance that struck the Perri while with an open goal.
At the other end, their clearest opportunity came from an Alisson mistake. The experienced shot-stopper played a wayward clearance straight to midfielder Ethan Ampadu, whose instant effort back towards goal was gathered by the recovering goalkeeper.
Scrappy Final Stages
The contest descended into a bitty affair, low on quality. The midfielder, back from suspension, tested Perri from range. The subsequent rebound led to Ampadu handling the ball, awarding the hosts a set-piece in a dangerous position, which Wirtz wasted into the wall.
Slot made a triple change to bring impetus, and soon after Virgil van Dijk went agonisingly close to nodding his side in front from a corner, his header bouncing just wide the post.
Late introduction Dominic Calvert-Lewin believed he had continued his scoring streak for Leeds in the final minutes, but his tap-in was ruled out for a marginal offside call. Ultimately, both sides had to accept a single of the points.
