New York Unveils Online Platform for Residents to Share Immigration Videos After Detentions of 4 American Citizens
The state attorney general has introduced a fresh online portal urging locals to provide images and footage of ICE operations throughout the state. This move comes just a day after a significant enforcement action disrupted Chinatown in Manhattan, sparking large-scale outcry.
American Citizens Held In ICE Operation
A lawmaker announced during a news conference that four US citizens were arrested and held for "nearly 24 hours" after Tuesday's raid. Protests broke out in New York on Tuesday and Wednesday nights.
"Every New Yorker is entitled to reside free from terror," state officials declared in a release.
"For those who saw and documented federal operations during the raid, I encourage you to share that evidence with us. We are committed to examining these reports and investigating any violations of law."
Portal Features
The platform offers spaces to send visual evidence of the incident, along with a area to note where it occurred. When submitting, individuals must check a checkbox that acknowledges that "the attorney general might employ any materials, images, or footage in a official report, such as in a legal proceeding or official statement."
Details of the ICE Action
The Manhattan operation, which observers say involved more than 50 ICE personnel, took place in a well-known district of the city where counterfeit handbags, accessories, jewelry and merchandise are sold daily widely – frequently to sightseers.
Recordings of the operation depict multiple covered and weaponized officers securing and holding a man, and forcing aside bystanders. Masses of New Yorkers followed the officers down the sidewalks. An armored truck was observed moving along the urban roads.
Official Reactions
At a Wednesday press conference organized with the rights organization, congressman Dan Goldman, a Democratic representative, said that four nationals were detained by ICE for almost a full day and that there were "no situations where US citizens should be taken for unjustly." He said the persons were freed on Wednesday with no charges filed.
"There's a clear purpose here. It is not about removing offenders," the congressman remarked. "This represents a military-style operation to incite tension. It is purely a justification to generate turmoil for the government to utilize the military to stop conflict that they initiated."
Extensive Outcry
Fury over the federal action quickly spread – every political contenders criticized the operation, along with the state leader.
"Repeatedly, the Trump administration chooses oppressive displays that generate terror, instead of protection. It needs to cease," a contender stated.
New York City community groups spoke out too.
"Immigration agents targeted Manhattan's Chinatown with armored transports, masked agents and tactical gear to focus on local sellers attempting to earn income. This operation had no relation to public safety and focused completely on frightening communities and areas," said the head of a rights organization.
ICE Policies
ICE policy bans the arrest of American nationals and the bureau has said it refrains from take into custody US citizens. However, external research has discovered that more than 170 American nationals have been held against their will by federal agents since the start of the present government.
Recent Pattern
Enforcement actions have been rising in frequency in NY and around the country this year.
A mid-October raid in central NYC was the earliest reported action on an immigrant shelter of the present government. Rallies targeting immigration enforcement are ubiquitous as are accusations of violence and inhumane treatment.
Latest, a submission submitted by civil rights groups stated healthcare failures of women with child in government custody.
