Nicolas Sarkozy to Pen Jail Diary Chronicling Two Dozen Days Behind Bars

Nicolas Sarkozy will soon publish a memoir next month titled A Prisoner’s Diary, chronicling his time spent in jail.

The revelation came shortly following the former president left prison while he contests the court ruling related to illegal collaboration regarding a scheme to obtain election campaign funds provided by the leadership of Muammar Gaddafi.

Life Behind Bars: Inner Thoughts

“Behind bars there is nothing to see, and nothing to do,” he notes in one passage, indicating the account centers around his reflections during seclusion as opposed to wider commentary on the packed and troubled jail system in France.

“I forget silence, which is missing in La Santé, where one hears constant sound,” he states. “The din unfortunately never stops. However, akin to empty spaces, one’s inner world is strengthened behind bars.”

Release Hearing: Recounting the Hardship

While appealing for release, he was present via screen from a room in prison, characterizing his incarceration as exhausting. He expressed in court: “I want to pay tribute the correctional officers, showing great humanity, and who helped make this difficult experience tolerable – because it is a nightmare.”

“I never imagined that at 70 years of age, I’d be in prison. It’s a hardship I must endure. I admit it’s difficult, it’s very hard. It affects one all who experience it because it’s gruelling.”

First of Its Kind

He, who led the nation between 2007 and 2012, set a precedent as past president from the EU and the first leader since WWII from France to experience jail.

Prior to imprisonment he mentioned he intended to spend the period for authoring a memoir.

Books in Prison

Unconfirmed is if he found the opportunity to review and analyze the texts he took into prison: a life story of Jesus spanning two books and Alexandre Dumas’s novel the famous story, where a blameless person is sentenced to jail later flees to seek vengeance.

Life in Confinement

The former leader was placed secluded to protect him in a space approximately nine square meters featuring a personal bathroom at La Santé prison in the city. Two bodyguards stayed in the next cell.

It was stated that he had eaten solely dairy snacks during his stay worried that prison cuisine might have been spat on. Although he had access to prepare his own meals yet he declined, according to reports. Not known is if he will detail his dietary choices.

Legal Perspective

His attorney, who visited his client daily while he was in prison, informed the court security would be better outside jail rather than in custody. “There were threats against his life, heard shouts at night plus rapid actions in a neighbouring cell as a detainee harmed themselves.”

Charges and Sentence

Sarkozy went to prison on 21 October when a Paris court gave him a half-decade term for criminal conspiracy related to a plan to secure election financing for his presidential bid.

He denies wrongdoing challenging the decision, with a new trial is scheduled for the coming spring.
