The Game UN:Me: An Psychological Horror That Blends Survival Horror and Social Deduction Mechanics
The latest Day of the Devs digital showcase revealed several fascinating future games, but one especially has captured the imagination: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player experience appears to blend the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill title with the suspicion-driven core of Among Us.
"It's a unique experience where a girl containing multiple human souls inside her must escape from a labyrinth of the mind," states developer Yasukazu Kawai.
Entering a Fractured Consciousness
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed female protagonist who appears to be of teenage years. Inside her reside four distinct personas, all possessing unique fears and drives. These entities can seize control at will, unleashing their innermost terrors upon her suddenly.
Judging by showcased gameplay, much of the narrative takes place within a eerie medical facility, while additional clips depict the protagonist exploring a abandoned chapel.
An Environment of Individual Dread
"What makes you fearful of? What makes you uneasy?" poses game director Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Small rooms. People in power. Elements that appear minor to others can activate something primal inside us. This game delves into that concept — anxieties that are unique to each person."
The central gameplay loop involves controlling whichever soul emerges at any given time. However, these souls will switch involuntarily as you play. While exploring, every persona's fears become exaggerated and assault the girl in succession. As the persona changes, so does the particular terror the player encounters.
Unsettling Visuals and a Fatal Choice
At first glance, UN:Me shares noticeable aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill series. The hospital is filled with nurses all sporting the same face, with disturbingly broad grins. Figures in the lobby have enormous blooms growing from their necks are. Floral motifs are a recurring element, juxtaposing natural beauty with supernatural dread.
Yet, UN:Me presents a singular twist. Players must determine which of the four entities inhabiting the protagonist is the "real" one. "All four personas claims that the body belongs to them," explains a developer. "During the game, you need to figure out who is real."
Once players have deduced a soul is fake, they are forced to destroy it. However, since every entity can deceive or obfuscate the truth, it is very easy to make a mistake.
"Perhaps you've already eliminated the real [soul] with your own hands," a voice suggests. "The last one standing might be a fake. Either way, your decisions are irreversible."
UN:Me currently lacks a publicly announced launch window, but it is available to wishlist on platforms.
