New York City's Mayor-Elect, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to take up residence in the traditional Gracie Mansion, departing from the rent-stabilised apartment that was a central issue during his run for office.

A Traditional Abode

Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the official residence for most New York City mayors after the mid-20th century.

However, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a central policy, hesitated to declare this decision promptly after his triumph in November.

"The choice came down to the security of my family and the importance of dedicating all of my focus on implementing the platform on affordability New Yorkers supported," stated Mamdani on Monday.

Thanking a Neighborhood

Mamdani lived in the Queens borough of Astoria, an area known for its abundance of immigrant communities and culinary diversity.

"To the people of Astoria: my gratitude for showing us the best of New York City," he noted.

"Even though I'm moving in Astoria, it will continue to reside a part of me and the work I do," he affirmed.

Political Debate

During his campaign, Mamdani linked his core platform – halting rent increases – to his own housing situation.

However his rivals, most notably one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for living in the affordable housing despite the fact that he hails from a prominent family.

A House Not Always Used

Not every mayor have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, preferred to remain in his private home on the Upper East Side for his tenure, which wrapped up in 2012.

In his view, Bloomberg said he believed it ought to be a space for public city functions, and championed an extensive renovation of the historic mansion.

A Vastly Different Setting

As he settles into Gracie Mansion for his inauguration on 1 January, he will be surrounded by a setting far removed from his modest Astoria digs.

Adorned in cream-colored walls, green shutters, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure with views of the East River.

Internally, the lower floor of the classically designed mansion is decorated in the spirit of the home's original era.

The compound, which is said to has several bedrooms, also includes increased security measures to secure the mayor and his family.

Ghostly Tales

Past occupants have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.

Chirlane McCray, the partner of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that doors occasionally opened and closed by themselves, and the floorboards creaked eerily.

Former Mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "It doesn't matter the skeptics say," he stated in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."

A Critical Policy Issue

The apartment he is leaving is rent-stabilized, a policy where the city regulates on how much building managers can raise the rent each year.

Tenants see such units as valuable lifelines as the housing expenses outpaces the average income.

It was reported Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Based on data from the real estate platform Zillow, the median rent for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
