The Reason Real Madrid Have 'Utter Confidence' in Youngster Thiago Pitarch
Whenever a teenage creates club history in a key European match against City, it inevitably draws praise and the spotlight.
In only his maiden start in the competition - and fifth game for the club - Thiago Pitarch suitably impressed as the fifteen-time European champions secured a three-nil last-16 first-leg advantage at the Bernabeu.
The young player, who also made his club debut in the play-off round a month ago with a substitute appearance at Sporting Lisbon, then helped Los Blancos overcome the English Premier League side in Tuesday's return to secure a quarter-final place.
Aged 18 years and 226 days, Pitarch became the club's most youthful starter to begin two matches in the Champions League's latter rounds, beating star Vinicius Jr's previous mark by a week and a half.
Rapid Ascent Through The Academy
This talent is the most recent to emerge from the club's academy and is quickly establishing himself as one of the manager's most promising young players.
He signed for Madrid from CD Leganes in the summer of 2023, having previously been with Atletico and Getafe youth teams, and starting out for the Juvenil C team, where he quickly made a positive impact.
He progressed to the B team and it was during a friendly match in which they faced the senior squad, then coached by the former defender, where the youngster is said to have drawn the eye of the present manager, who took over from Xabi Alonso in the new year.
Reports would later describe the moment as "love at first sight," noting Pitarch stood out not only for his technical ability, but for the vitality, character and drive he added to the side.
'His Best Attribute Is His Character'
In the summer of 2025, former boss Alonso invited the youngster to train with the senior squad and awarded him playing time during pre-season.
However, it was the change in manager that became the defining moment in his development as he was introduced as a second-half replacement in each leg against Benfica that led to the meeting with Pep Guardiola's team.
"I've dreamed of this every night when sleeping, the very first time I began playing the game, every day you go to train and each day you play a match," said Pitarch following his first appearance.
"I have just fulfilled my dream with the best team in the planet and in the top tournament."
Handed a starting debut in La Liga against his former club - where he spent several seasons after moving from Atleti in 2018 - he has retained his spot for the following four as injuries to Bellingham and Ceballos provided an opportunity.
Pitarch has taken it with displays that have belied his age and experience.
"He's a extremely fast footballer, and you can observe what he's capable of," remarked the coach. "He's incredibly dynamic, with great endurance, work-rate and movement."
The player's mindset has also impressed his manager.
"His greatest quality is his personality," added he. "He always wants the possession, and when pressed, he doesn't feel it.
"I understand people are surprised to see him make his debut in a Champions League match, but he is selected because I had total confidence in him to do what he usually does.
"Thiago will continue to get chances with the main squad. It's a pleasure to have a player like him."
Spain or Morocco?
Born in Fuenlabrada, in the Spanish capital's community, and was raised fully immersed in Spanish football, progressing through local academies before joining the club's renowned youth academy.
He possesses dual Spanish and Moroccan citizenship, giving him the option to represent either country at senior international level.
Under Fifa eligibility rules, players may represent different countries at junior level without being locked in, with the ultimate choice only final once they appear in a competitive senior international match.
He has featured for Spain at youth level, turning out for both the U19 and U20 sides, and participated in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where La Roja reached the last eight.
Nevertheless, he has not yet decided to either senior national team, who are monitoring his progress with keen attention.
In a recent interview, the player confirmed: "I haven't made my final decision yet. My situation is great with Spain, but I will reach a conclusion soon."
This scenario mirrors that of other bi-national players such as Real team-mate Diaz and Barca star Lamine Yamal. Whereas 18-year-old Yamal chose Spain, Diaz decided to play for Morocco.
Focus on the Future
For now, his attention is on making his mark in the Madrid lineup and rewarding his manager's belief.
He featured for over an hour in the 2-1 victory at City, which completed a 5-1 aggregate success and a last-eight matchup with Bayern Munich.
His substitution by fellow youth graduate in Angel to emphasise the coach's confidence in younger players to help the team chase future success.
After his impressive impact to date on European football's biggest stage, Pitarch is expected to play a key role in that.
"Arbeloa treats me the identical way. We deal with it very normally. I try not to overanalyze it excessively - I have to earn my playing time on the field," he said following the win at Manchester.
