Trump's Woke Alarm Misses The Continent's True Danger: Technological Decline.

Donald Trump's security policy document presents a flawed view of Europe. The document asserts that open-border policies and what it terms "woke" policies pose an grave threat to European civilization. However, this argument is based on a serious misinterpretation of the reality. The actual danger facing Europe is not cultural but technological and economic lag.

A Glaring Economic Gap Separating the US and Europe

The data reveal a sobering contrast. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP surged by eighty-seven percent, while a mere thirteen and a half percent increase for the European Union. During this period, European income per person dropped from 76.5% to just 50% of the American figure. Remarkably, even the poorest US state now boasts a greater average income than major EU nations like France and Italy.

Today, about half of the global top fifty tech companies are American, while a mere four are from Europe.

The Innovation Deficit: A Critical Question

This widening disparity stems from stronger productivity growth in the US, largely due to breakthroughs and higher total factor productivity. The scene of world technology leadership is overwhelmingly American. Over the past fifty years, 241 US firms have grown into companies valued at more than ten billion dollars, compared with just 14 in Europe.

This gap raises a vital issue: In the race for tomorrow's sectors like semiconductors, AI, and quantum computing, where does Europe stand? Most analysts agree it is largely a two-horse race between the US and China, with Europe starting at a clear handicap.

Root Causes of Europe's Innovation Gap

A number of major reasons account for this innovation chasm.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The United States has a far deeper and agile system for funding startups. The EU has yet to establish a genuine unified investment market, which caps the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Complex and divided regulation hinder European business. A US startup can launch a product under one regulatory framework to access a consumer base of hundreds of millions. The EU, despite a bigger population, is split among twenty-seven different national regimes, creating huge internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Attitudes toward entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In parts of Europe, a startup's collapse was once met with stigma, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The United States enjoys a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. The continent's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has weakened its capacity for pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Reasons for Cautious Optimism

Despite these challenges, one can find reasons for optimism. European leaders are growing more conscious of the existential challenge and have begun to propose substantial change. Key reports on European competitiveness and the internal market point to the need for major reforms.

With the right policies and rule changes, these assets might enable much higher levels of business-led breakthroughs.

The continent retains significant strengths: skilled workforce, top-tier schools and universities, and world-class research institutions. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these foundations have the potential to trigger a surge of venture creation.

Importantly, even if the EU does not become the leader in developing next-generation tech, it can still dramatically boost economic output by adopting and adapting innovations from other regions.

An Inflection Point

The European Union now faces a critical crossroads. To paraphrase a famous line, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, Europe's technological decline has been gradual. But, without bold steps to address its deep-seated problems, today's slow erosion could turn into a sudden and irreversible decline in world influence.
