As part of a notable escalation, Ukrainian forces reportedly used long-range Storm Shadow missiles to target and hit a key Russian oil processing facility. This strike occurred on Thursday, as stated by the country's military command.

Attack Particulars and Strategic Impact

The plant in question, the Novoshakhtinsk refinery, was reportedly hit, with multiple blasts observed at the location. This marks not the first instance where Ukraine has utilized these powerful British-supplied missiles to hit targets inside Russian territory.

Ukrainian officials emphasized that the Novoshakhtinsk plant acts as one of the primary providers of petrol products in southern Russia and is actively engaged in supplying the armed forces of the Russian Federation.

Diplomatic Developments on the Conflict

Separately, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated on Thursday that he held “very good” discussions with representatives of ex-President Donald Trump, namely Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. These talks centered on potential pathways to bring the conflict to a close.

“We had a really good conversation: numerous specifics, good ideas, that we discussed,” Zelenskyy stated on a social media platform. “There are some new ideas on how to bring real peace closer, and it involves approaches, potential summits, and, certainly, the timeline.”

Judicial Proceedings Within Russia

In a parallel internal matter, a Russian court has found guilty a pro-war activist and opponent of Vladimir Putin on charges of justifying terrorism. Sergei Udaltsov, head of the Left Front movement, was sentenced to six years in a penal colony.

The charges reportedly stem from an article Udaltsov shared in support of another group of Russian activists charged with forming a terrorist organisation. Udaltsov has rejected the charges as fabricated and, after the sentencing, reportedly announced to begin a hunger strike in defiance.

International Detainee Situation

Russian authorities has stated it is engaged with French officials concerning the case of Laurent Vinatier, a French political scholar serving a prison term in Russia and reportedly facing new charges of espionage.

An official said that Russia has presented a proposal to France in the case of Vinatier, and now “the ball is in France’s court.” French President Emmanuel Macron’s office stated he is monitoring the situation, with all state resources working to offer assistance and push for his liberation as soon as possible.

Controversial Reopening in Occupied City

The Mariupol Drama Theatre, which was leveled in a 2022 Russian airstrike while hundreds of civilians were sheltering in its cellar, is set to reopen. Authorities in control have heralded the reconstruction as a sign of renewal.

However, previous staff from the theatre have called the reopening as “a macabre spectacle.” The reconstruction is part of a wider Kremlin effort to showcase its administration in seized territories, a process that includes the arrest or exile of critics and property seizures from Ukrainian citizens.

It is expected to open by the end of the month with a performance of a Russian fairytale, following its reconstruction largely anew over the past two years.
