What We Know Concerning the Those Lost of the Bondi Terrorist Incident

At least 16 individuals lost their lives and over 40 were hurt when attackers opened fire at a Hanukah event at Bondi Beach, an incident local police are describing as a act of terrorism.

As of the newest reports, officials have announced the death toll is 16, including one of the alleged gunmen. Additionally, 42 people with injuries were admitted to medical facilities.

Those who died are still awaiting officially identified, but investigators think their ages range between 10 and 87 years of age.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Reportedly a father-of-five, he served as the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and friends remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative remarked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their youngest child in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, according to his wife.

She recounted the events leading up to the attack, saying they had been standing together when the gunfire started. “He moved to protect me because he wished to be near me,” she said.

The couple were both survivors of the Holocaust, having endured immense hardship in their childhood. They had later immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

The French authorities have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

Publicly, a senior official expressed that France mourned with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the statement continued.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital succumbed to her injuries, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was a fatality in the incident, as per reports citing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

From the 42 people transported to hospitals, many remain receiving treatment, with a number in critical condition. Those hurt include two police officers who attended the scene.

One of the injured is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to confront one of the gunmen. Described as a hero, he received gunshot wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Sources state he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.

In a message, he recounted the scene as an “utter carnage,” but also noted the response of those who came to assist. He said he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the shooting. He described he heard “dozens and dozens” of shots.

“I thought it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I was hit. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
